Product description

Bestack presented the active corrugated cardboard packaging it patented in November 2015.
Now Bestack presents the applications results in the market and the consumer benefits.
Active packaging is the product of a partnership between Bestack and the research group led by Professor Rosalba Lanciotti of Bologna University's Department of Food and Agriculture Science and Technology in Cesena launched five years ago to improve corrugated cardboard packaging for fruit and vegetables.
The goal was to develop packaging capable of controlling the microbiological load of the fruit and vegetables stored in it. After studying the health and safety levels of the various types of packaging for fruit and vegetables on the market and defining the contamination transferred from the packaging to the products stored in it, research focused on controlling microbial load proliferation, culminating in a patented innovation capable of increasing product shelf life, reducing waste, increasing the probability of consumption with consequent financial savings, and improving the quality of the products sold. This patent is available to all Bestack's member firms producing packaging in accordance with the voluntary certification undersigned by the Bestack consortium itself.
Bestack's active corrugated cardboard packaging uses naturally occurring essential oils already used by the food industry in accordance with the law to regulate and slow down ripening processes naturally.
After various tests, first in the laboratory and then in storerooms, in 2016 active packaging was tested directly at sales and in 2017 in the points of sale of the motst important retailers with exciting results and huge financial benefits.

Exhibitor profile

Bestack is the Italian consortium of producers of cardboard fruit and vegetable packaging. It is a non-profit organisation set up in 2004 grouping together the main national firms which account for around 95% of the Italian production of corrugated cardboard packaging for fruit and vegetables. Bestack was set up for sector research, innovation and promotion purposes.
A sector-wide approach to fruit and vegetable packaging is very important. Vegetable and fruit production is generally small scale with an equally fragmented distribution network with consequent longer distances and more complex transport conditions. Logistics thus play a fundamental role with short time frames to be respected. Corrugated cardboard is the most widespread, versatile and personalisable fruit and vegetable packaging. Bestack thus drew up a size standard for packaging which was then adopted Europe-wide with the Fefco CF standard. In Italy today classic fruit and vegetable packaging formats are all the same basic sizes and can be stacked up regardless of the producer, making for straightforward and safe transport logistics and leaving total freedom of choice of corrugated cardboard packaging safe in the knowledge that sizes will be identical and eliminating fruit and vegetable packaging sorting problems at shops Europe-wide. And that's not all. Bestack also certifies the packaging produced by its members and checks raw material sustainability, extending the shelf life of the stored products and guaranteeing food safety standards with a voluntary certification project which is the only one of its kind in the fruit and vegetable packaging sector. But above all Bestack means innovation and research in the development of new cardboard packaging functions at the service of fruit and vegetable producers as well as dissemination of the results by means of initiatives supporting sustainable and environmentally aware consumption in schools and institutions.
